Born extremely premature at 850 grams, Helima's daughter fought through 29 days of intensive care — and kept growing.

When Helima's* daughter arrived, she weighed just 850 grams — less than a bag of sugar. Born extremely premature, she struggled to breathe from her very first moments and faced the added dangers of infection and newborn jaundice. She was admitted straight to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) at Bundi District Hospital.

For 29 days, Helima's daughter received round-the-clock monitoring and care. Through it all, the KMC team guided Helima in Kangaroo Mother Care and breastfeeding — holding her baby skin-to-skin to keep her warm, steady her breathing, and help her grow. Step by step, Helima learned how to position her daughter safely, guard against infection, and read what her tiny baby needed.

Going home, and growing

After a month of constant care, Helima's daughter went home — stable, and now weighing 1,370 grams. Helima kept up at least eight hours of skin-to-skin care every day. By her follow-up a month later, her daughter had reached 2,050 grams — more than doubling the weight she was born at.
